Custom Instrumentation Solutions for Performance and Risk Management

Constructing your project can impact the earth and in-place structures close to your project. Foundation Design, P.C. works with your design team, construction team, and other interested parties to define potential receptors that could be adversely impacted by the construction operations. Our engineering staff can review the proposed construction methods, provide recommendations for appropriate instrumentation methods, and develop a plan for the instrumentation monitoring to help protect nearby receptors. Utilizing a combination of vibration and noise monitoring equipment, soil and structural monitoring points, inclinometer casings, crack gages, settlement plates, and tiltmeters, our staff can monitor the impact that your project has on the surrounding earth.

Design Phase

During design, Foundation Design, P.C. can work with your design and construction team to develop a Construction Instrumentation Monitoring Plan specifically for your site conditions. In advance of the construction, our experienced engineering staff can locate receptors near the construction site, review the construction methods proposed, assess the potential impacts on the receptors, determine which receptors may be impacted, and consult on potential adjustments to the construction methods to reduce impacts. If warranted, our staff can develop a Construction Instrumentation Monitoring Plan for implementation as the work progresses to serve your specific needs:

$

Work with owner/client to define items (receptors) that require instrumentation

$

Define tolerances for the various receptors (settlement, vibration, noise)

$

Assess appropriate instrumentation equipment required

  • Vibration Monitoring
  • Noise Monitoring
  • Structural Monitoring Points
  • Soil Monitoring Points
  • Crack Gauges
  • Pipe Monitoring Points
  • Inclinometers Casings
  • Settlement Plates
  • Tiltmeters
$

Assess construction impacts on the receptors, reviewing the proposed construction activity and equipment to be utilized

$

Analyze the vibration levels anticipated at the receptors for the equipment proposed

$

Document baseline vibration levels; compare to anticipated construction levels to see if adverse impacts are anticipated

$

Assess adjustments to construction approach that could reduce impacts on receptors

  • Use of different equipment
  • Change in method of completing work
  • Performing work at times when equipment operations are not impacted
$

Assess adjustments to receptors that could reduce impacts on operations

  • Use of damping tables
  • Installation of equipment isolation pads
$

Develop instrumentation installation location plan

$

Develop construction instrumentation action and alert levels for each type of instrumentation equipment to be installed

$

Develop a Construction Instrumentation Monitoring Plan that summarizes work completed and monitoring required during construction

Construction Phase

Where new construction is undertaken close to sensitive operations, construction monitoring is required to verify that the operations are not impacting the sensitive activities near-by. Foundation Design, P.C. has performed construction monitoring along rail lines, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, commercial facilities, residential properties, and other sensitive areas to document construction levels generated and consult on construction methods to mitigate the impacts that were generated.

The services have included the use of the following instrumentation methods:
