Forensic Services for Remodeling, Expansion, or Repairs
Uncovering the Cause. Delivering the Solution
Foundations / Floor Slabs
Foundation settlement can develop that becomes excessive, resulting in distress to the structure. Renovations and/or building expansions can result in changes in building layouts that result in heavier floor and column loads being developed than were present in the original design. Excessive slab curling and/or surface cracking may develop in floor slabs, causing operational issues to develop. Our experienced design professionals can assist in defining conditions and developing recommendations to address these concerns.
Collect/review existing site/structural plans and pre-existing subsurface data
Develop exploration approach to assess the underlying earth
- Soil borings, soil probes, test pits
- Floor cores
- Concrete thickness, rebar measurements, compressive strength tests
- Voids thickness/extent under slab
- Ground penetrating radar survey for voids under slabs
- Crack/settlement monitoring
- Expose/document existing foundation sizes/depth
Assess construction impacts on existing construction
Develop underpinning/shoring recommendations
Assess dewatering impacts on existing construction
Analyze the data and develop design recommendations
Pavements
Collect/review existing site plans and pre-existing subsurface data
Develop exploration approach to assess the underlying earth
- Pavement Cores
- Asphalt Top, Binder, Base Course thickness
- Subbase thickness and gradation
- Subgrade Conditions
- Assess drainage characteristics of in-place subbase material
- Assess presence of unsuitable material under subbase course
Assess rehabilitation versus reconstruction options
- Milling and resurfacing
- Reuse of in-place subbase material
- Installation of underdrains
- Develop replacement pavement sections
- Assess undercutting requirements
- New asphalt and subbase thicknesses
- Extent of full depth box-out requirements
Slope Failures
The earth does not always stay where it is supposed to be. Slope failure develop that impact roads, parking lots, structures, and that restrict/reduce the area of usable surfaces. Our staff uses computer modeling to develop pre- and post-failure factor of safety estimates and to assess potential repair configurations.
